Arthritis is a description of not one, but many similar diseases, these diseases also known as musculoskeletal, are all regarded as arthritis as they effect the joint and the surrounding tissue & tendons. Rheumatoid arthritis is the autoimmune version of arthritis and is unfortunately classed as a chronic condition. Having RA in the long term. one may experience changes in symptoms, with long and short periods of remission being common.

The term autoimmune describes a condition which causes one's own immune system to mistakenly attack bodily tissues. In the case of RA this metabolic condition is known to attack and inflame the joint lining referred to as the synovium, Inflammation of the synovium causes extreme pain and swelling.
