Bill Bartmann's Tip #1 for time management is to learn how to separate work from home. While many self-employed people work from home, that doesn't meant they have to both juggle home and business life all the time.
Unfortunately it is easy to get caught up in the tug of war between home and work. While you want to work, there are those pressing household chores that you think you could do just a couple of. Then a couple more crop up and more after that. Before you know it, you're half way through the day and you have not completed any business. Instead you need to get yourself into a work mindset and set a work scheduled to get jobs done.
Set a Work Timer
One way to make sure you are working a complete shift is to literally set up a clock or timer that monitors the work you are doing on a workday. You can use any sort of timer you have around the house for this. If you use your computer a lot, you may even be able to download a work timer. This will show you just how much of your time is being used for work and how much is being wasted on other things.
Use the output of the timer to help you tweak your workday so you are getting enough work in between all the other things that are getting your attention.
Train Friends and Family
Bill Bartmann's Tip #3 is that you have to train your friends and family to be respectful of your work time. If you are just starting to work at home, you are about to hear a couple of phrases a lot from those around you. "But you're home all day" or "but you're not doing anything". These are very common phrases that you will hear. Since you are home all day, people assume you have time to drop what you are doing and do anything they need. Of course this is not the case, you need to be working and getting things done, but it can be an uphill battle to explain that to others.
There are enough uphill battles to working for yourself in today's economy, you don't need to have other powers working against your success. One of the easiest ways to run into problems is in the area of time management. From the get go you need to set a schedule for your work day, let others know what it is, and stick to it.

Franklin Covey Time Management
Those kind of "Brute Force Time Management" techniques can work, but there are also other things you can do to help you manage your time better; things which take very little time and precious little mental will power.
A very smart man named "Buckminster Fuller" is quoted as saying "Environment is stronger than will power". I think he got it right. If you're overweight and trying to avoid sugar, how hard do you think that would be if you have a box of candy sitting on your desk at the office? Now if instead, there was a plate of fresh cut vegetables there instead, you'd probably find it pretty easy to avoid sugar at that moment don't you think?
Most people don't even stop to think about their environment as they go about trying to improve their time management skills. I think the idea of creating an environment to support your productivity and time management success is something to consider. Try something here for a minute and see what you think.
Sit for a moment and see what you see in your work space. Choose five obvious elements in your work space and pose yourself the following question "Does what I'm looking at right now help me reach my productivity and time management goals or get in the way of reaching those same goals?"
If the element you're looking at doesn't support your time management efforts, eliminate it from your environment right then and there.
Most people have at least one element they should toss. Oddly enough, when doing this exercise, people suddenly see their television as a major distraction. Something that not only slows their productivity, but which also can completely destroy your ability to accomplish your daily goals. If you have a television in your work space, unplug it and move it out of the room.
Another distraction can be something as simple as a pile of papers on your desk. Clearly they are important because you've "piled" them up on your desk. The real question to ask is whether that pile supports your time management goals or not. When it's time to find something in that pile, chances are you'll have to spend a bit of extra time digging through all the papers to find the one you want. You may even spill the papers on to the floor at some point, causing you to waste time having to pick them all up.
These two examples might seem silly, but you get the point. Eliminating the non-supportive elements in your environment is the first step to creating an environment that supports your goals to be better at time management.
Of course after you remove distractions and non-supportive elements, your next step will be to add elements to your environment that actually support your time management improvement goals. We cover more of that in my other articles.
