With a size zero waist and a repertoire for love songs, it would be an instant assumption that rocker Missy Higgins was bred somewhere like Southern California. But once the balladeer puts down her guitar and opens up with her sweet smile, one knows instantly that this talented musician is all Australian. Her thick accent is almost muted when she sings songs about broken relationships and steering her own life, but as soon as she tells her random stories about filming a movie in Australia or attempting a song for Shrek 2, the feminine artist reveals the love of her home country and the place that she first found a home for her classic singles. Having just returned from Australia for a five week “holiday,” in which she filmed an indie musical (assumingly only getting previews in Broome where she filmed), the Melbourne singer/songwriter eagerly opened up about her travels, her inspirations for singles like “Peachy,” and “Where I Stood,” and her future. Having toured since she was a teen, the songstress might not be back in the States for much longer. “It will be good to do something else for a while,” she said, talking to The Press-Enterprise. “I have this craving to restart the academic side of my brain.” Only 25, Higgins started singing with her brother when she was just 13 and continued to remain on stage as she won an Australian competition for a radio station and started recording her debut. As she promoted her first singles, touring with everyone from Liz Phair to Ben Folds and Gavin DeGraw, Higgins has seen loads of success with Aria awards and international recognition for her new take on some classics.

Now a musical advocate for her new home of Broome (the north of Australia), Higgins instantly felt inspired by the countryside and the pride its residents felt for their country. Taking residence in a small shack with beaten-down walls, where about half the songs on Higgins second album were written, and now she's taking part in the “Save the Kimberly Coast” campaign with songs and awareness. “I know that that there are plans for some serious industrialization up in the Kimberly coast,” she says in the video clip. “We can't just let the oil and the gas companies come and destroy this beautiful land. This is a criminal thing to do to this part of the country. It's just wrong.” Writing the song “Going North” in response to the act, one line says “And I wanna know where children would go/if they never learned to be cool/'cause nothing's achieved when pushed up a sleeve/so nobody thinks you're a fool,” and is described by Higgins on how to be brave.

The artist likes to keep things simple and always makes music her priority. When recent interviews described her bisexuality, Higgins responded on her MySpace page with a powerful message that said, “Please rest assured that I am not, never have been, and never will be ashamed of my sexuality but also please respect the fact that when I do an interview I want it to be about my music and not about my love life!” The singer's sexuality may remain a mystery, but for Higgins fans it's not about the typical Hollywood gossip that makes Higgins a star – as her fans vary just as much as her sexuality – they simply enjoy her strong beats, fluid voice and meaningful lyrics.
