Short Term Memory Loss

    View:
For a lot of people out there, there is no stopping memory loss once they start to mature in their age, and this becomes even more noticeable as they slip past the ages of 40 and get well into their 50's. The thing is, the science behind this is so advanced that the patterns of age related short term memory loss can be detected sometimes as early as the 20's and the 30's of the particular individual, and this is achieved through the use of neuropsychological testing in the environment of a hospital. Of course, you need to be aware that this sort of pattern is commonly found within the family, and if you have both and all grandparents or relatives beyond the ages of 50 who have been suffering from short term memory loss.

The thing is, this is common for everyone, it is just the different degrees in which memory and other mental and physical faculties? sort of degenerate as age catches up with us. You can compare this quite easily to things like physical and athletic abilities, which peaks around adulthood and slowly slips away when we reach our mature years. However, science has proven that there is no such thing as universal age related short term memory loss; which means that all aspects of memory will slip away as age becomes a factor. In fact, the ailment is quite specific in a sense that some memories and some aspects of remembrance will become affected, but other areas will be as accessible as ever before.

For example, forgetting mechanical memory like riding a bicycle or even swimming is something you will never forget, no matter how old you get, and its resilience will even surpass degenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer's. You may start to forget faces and names of people, as most common with old people who start to experience memory loss. To find the core of this problem, we have to delve a bit deeper into neurosurgery and in this case the areas of the cortex that include the axon, the dendrite, and the synapse.

The reason why age is a factor to memory loss (as these areas control the bulk of it) is simply because brain cells die as age becomes a factor, and when they die, they affect the neuron communication to the synapse and the dendrite; thus limiting communication flow in and around the memory banks. There are established therapies which help to promote neurogenesis, or the regrowth of some of these brain cells, and there are even classes that use the individual's very own inert will power combined with mental exercises to stimulate the brain.

Also, there is a lot of talk surrounding brain food and certain supplementation that you can use to augment the power of the brain and even slow down the process. As you can see, the route is not yet closed for you to regenerate those memory glands and ensure that you overcome age related short term memory loss.
Short Term Memory Loss
What are som of these more complex matters?

Alzheimer's disease

Anyone who has lost a loved one to Alzheimer's understands that this cause of short term memory loss is something not to be taken lightly. Now that our overall population is aging the occurrence of Alzheimer's disease and dementia become more and more prevalent. These two diseases are the subject of a lot of research and although no real cure has been found for it, we now have the ability to nip it in the bud or at least diagnosing it correctly in the preliminary stages which is crucial for effective management.

Blood Sugar

Our modern fast lifestyle leads many of to skip meals during the day forcing us to have a large meal at night. People that starve themselves often have very instable blood sugar levels. Low blood sugar can lead the brain to get sleepy and groggy this can then become one of the causes of short term memory loss. This is why doctors often recommend that patients who want to improve their memory have six small meals in a day as opposed to three large ones so as to keep blood sugar levels steady.

Hormonal Havoc

Again as a part of the aging process, hormonal imbalance is often a cause of short term memory loss as menopause sets in and estrogen levels start to dwindle. Although hormone replacement therapies and other such treatments and preventions have become common today, this is certainly a factor worth looking into when figuring out causes of memory loss.

Depression Medications and Drinking

I am sure you will agree that the pressures of life today are a major cause of depression and short term memory loss. People who suffer from depression, especially those who are taking medication, find that they often cannot remember things clearly. This is attributed to the side effects of the drugs. Apart from medical drugs, recreational drug abuse and excessive alcohol consumption are also known to be amongst the causes of short term memory loss.

Natural Treatments

It is important for your doctor to diagnose your condition and isolate the causes of your short term memory loss. He may recommend drugs, mental exercises, a more healthy lifestyle or some natural, herbal supplements.

Some studies have shown that the use of ginkgo biloba and anti-oxidants help to prevent brain cell damage and to restore mental memory function have been successful. But, unfortunately, there are no conclusive proven results as of yet. With this in mind, some like to try out the herbal supplements, some prefer a more pharmaceutical approach whereas some just like the old fashioned route of healthy eating and exercise. Ask your doctor which is best for your.

Like with everything in life without regular use you are likely to lose it. This most definitely applies to activity for the brain. It is therefore very important to keep your mind and body active ensuring good blood circulation. Don't succumb to the trappings of the modern sedentary lifestyle be active in both body and mind.
