Indoor Shutters For Windows
Christine Harrell
People who are looking at window coverings often never even think of indoor shutters. Their mind automatically goes to window shades and blinds, skipping right over these traditional window treatments. Yet they are the ideal choice for certain decors. They are more effective at blocking light and heat than window blinds and safer than many treatments due to the lack of dangling cords.
The Classic Design of Shutters
Even the finest wood blinds can't quite match the warmth that indoor shutters bring to a room. They have a characteristic look and feel that nothing else does.
Shutters open one of two ways, depending on the size and proportions of the window. Most designs open in the middle, folding in on each side of the window. Some are single units that open from one side of the window.
Large windows may use sectional mounts, allowing each section to be opened or closed independently. This allows more control of the amount of light let into the room, but even when fully opened their frames obstruct the view.
The width of the louver will change the character of the shutter. Traditional or colonial shutters use narrower louvers, usually 1 1/4" wide, to screen out some of the light even when the louvers are open. Plantation shutters have wider louvers, as much as 4" or more, and let in more light.
Cafe shutters are not actually a style but a type of installation. They cover only the lower portion of the window. The upper portion either has a curtain or is left uncovered.
Some interior shutter designs don't use louvers at all. Instead the frames have solid panels, cloth, or stained glass.
The Best Environmental Control
Because of their heavier, thicker construction, these window coverings offer better protection that window shades or blinds. They block light better than most window treatments, although there are dark window shades that are better. They are one of the most energy efficient choices available and their privacy control is unmatched.
Shutters block sound effectively, a unique trait other window coverings don't share. A closed shutter is like a wall and filters out almost all noise coming through the window. This makes them ideal choices for windows that face noise sources such as nearby businesses, schools, or railroad crossings.
A sturdy shutter adds security to a window that window shades can't.
A Little Goes a Long Way
What turns most people away from shutters is the cost. They can be substantially more expensive than window blinds so often are not the choice for the entire house. Instead, by picking which windows would most benefit from their unique characteristics, they work as a delightful accent to the overall decor of a home.
These timeless window treatments add beauty and function to any room. Take a look at their advantages and you'll agree that they are wonderful choices for many of the windows in your home.
