How To Treat Halitosis
Darren Wumoult
Having halitosis, otherwise known as chronic bad breath, and not knowing it can be pretty embarrassing when you find out later on. Therefore, if you are concerned about the condition of your breath and would like to find out before going out in public, there are ways you can check your breath. One of the best ways is mentioned below as well as ways to combat halitosis.
The best way you can check the condition of your breath is to lick on the back of your clean wrist and then smell it. If you notice a slight odor then you know that you have halitosis, or bad breath. Sometimes this condition is chronic, and sometimes it is just a result of poor oral hygiene. Therefore, the action that you take to combat it may be different for you than for someone else. However, there are some general oral hygiene tips that everyone should follow to help ensure clean smelling breath.
Once you determine that you do have bad breath, immediate treatment is necessary. If you don't take action right away, this will definitely put a hamper on your social life. Most treatments of bad breath are surprisingly easy, like brushing and flossing regularly.
If you practice the above steps to keeping your teeth and your mouth clean you will be assured to have less of a chance of having bad breath. That is because all the food particles from the inside of your mouth will be washed out. Furthermore, using alcohol free mouthwash will help continue the flowing of the protective natural juices (saliva) inside your mouth. Also, taking time to make sure that you take good care of your teeth and mouth will ensure fewer chances of the bacteria forming inside your mouth that causes halitosis.
If you are a fan of spicy cuisine from India, Thailand or Mexico, you're probably more susceptible to bad breath than other people. These dishes are abundant in seasonings and spices. Sure, these are delectable dishes but you do have to take extra care if you eat these foods on a regular basis. In fact, you might even want to avoid them if you have an upcoming blind date or job interview, where it is essential that you make the best impression that you can.
What's interesting about halitosis is that it can also come from unexpected places. For instance, if you practice strict oral hygiene but are suffering from diabetes, you still have a large possibility of sustaining bad breath. This is because the decreased immunity of diabetics paves the way for sporadic gum diseases such as gingivitis. The infections of these disorders can produce a rotten smell that comes out of the mouth as bad breath.
In these cases, there will be a slightly offensive odor in your breath regardless of how many times you brush your teeth or how many bottles of mouthwash you consume in a day. The best way to eliminate these types of bad breath is to treat your internal diseases. Monitoring your blood sugar levels can help control your diabetes, and using special medication for gingivitis can help reduce gum infections.
If the halitosis problem still exists, or is a result of something else such as a medication you cannot do without you may be able to find other cures for halitosis. The National Medical society has a special web page that is a short questionnaire for people like you who are suffering from halitosis, otherwise known as chronic bad breath. This online questionnaire requests information about a patient's age, length of time of halitosis condition, and other existing conditions you may have has such as cough or toothache. This helps a patient find the root cause of the condition and helps that person find the correct medical treatment.
A wide variety of treatment methods are available. Traditional dental products like special toothpastes and mouthwashes are still the most commonly used. However, herbal remedies and home therapies are also becoming more popular. You can ask your dentist about these options. He might even be able to recommend a particular brand that is more effective for your particular problem.
The internet is a haven for these oral products. In fact, most people shop for bad breath medication online because this method allows them to be completely anonymous when making a purchase. You can spend hours searching for a product that you think will work without worrying about what other people are thinking. The only problem with online shopping is that you will definitely encounter many low quality products. Because of this, you should exercise prudence when making your choice.
There are quite a bit if informative and free articles available to read online regarding halitosis as well. Some of the best readings can be found at About.com or Sinitinus.com. You can also sometimes access medical journal information that is sometimes available for free as well.
