How To Cure Gum Disease
Gabriel Adams
Gum disease is an unfortunate problem that is almost entirely preventable. It is easy to fall into the habit of not properly caring for your teeth, since you probably won't see an immediate repercussion if you miss a day or two of brushing or flossing. But gum disease can develop quickly, and it can wreak havoc in your mouth. Those with advanced gum disease can loose some (or even all) of their teeth. There are many things that contribute towards getting gum disease, so you should inform yourself so that you can avoid the unpleasant affliction.
Gum disease is cause by plaque. Plaque constantly forms on your teeth, and this isn't a problem as long as you clean them frequently. If you let it grow, then the plaque will eventually end up irritating your gums. It causes your gums to become inflamed. This is called gingivitis. Usually it isn't particularly unpleasant or painful. The gums become swollen, and slightly red. When flossing or brushing, they may bleed easily. If you notice these symptoms and you think you're on your way to advanced gum disease, then you should speak with your dentist and see if you can take preventative measures before things get too
However, if you do nothing about the gingivitis, it can eventually morph into something worse. The worse problem is called periodontitis. Plaque eventually spreads below the gums. This is when it starts its really harmful activity. The plaque produces bacteria, and the bacteria aggravates your gums. Only now, it's affecting the parts of your gums that are not exposed. As your mouth tries to correct the problem of the plaque in your gums, it starts to attack itself. The bones that support the teeth begin to dissolve, and tissues are loosened and broken down. The gums separate from the teeth, so a gap is formed. All the while, you will feel little to no discomfort. Eventually, your teeth will become loose. They will either fall out, or have to be surgically removed.
Plaque is the main cause of gum disease, but there are other factors that will increase your likelihood of getting it. It is a genetic problem, so if anyone in your family has suffered from it then you should be especially diligent in keeping your teeth clean. Poor nutrition and diabetes will make it harder for your body to get rid of the plaque that builds up, making it more apt to get beneath your gums. Last but not least, smoking greatly increases your risk for periodontal disease. In fact, doctors are saying it could be the most significant risk factor when determining how likely you are to get gum disease.
So you should do everything you can to prevent yourself from getting gum disease. It is extremely debilitating, and can ruin your smile. So eliminate as many risk factors as you can, and step up your oral hygiene. Keep your mouth clean, and your teeth can live long, healthy lives, and you won't have to worry about losing them to plaque-related diseases that you could have prevented.
