Basic Wig Guide
Suzen Rupar
Before you measure, make sure to flatten your hair. This will help take into consideration the fact that you will probably be wearing a mesh wig cap liner beneath your wig for a more comfortable and secure fit. Use a cloth measuring tape, being sure not to pull the tape measure too tight. Just rest the tape over or around your head. Pulling the tape measure too tight will stretch the tape and will not give you an accurate measurment. While it is important to get an accurate measurement to determine your wig cap size, keep in mind that most wigs have tabs which allow up to one inch of adjustment for a more secure fit.
1) Measure Around Your Head: Measure the total distance around your head starting at your natural hairline in the front, to just above your ears, and around the back to the bend of your neck and to the front of your head.
2) Measure Front to Back: Bend your head back. Then measure from your natural hairline in the front of your forehead, back over the crown to the bend where your head meets the top of your neck.
3) Measure Ear to Ear: Measure at the top front of one ear, lay the tape measure up and over the crown of your head to the same position on your other ear.
The 3 measurements listed above will determine the circumference, the depth and width of your wig cap and allow you to choose your correct size.
The following sizes should be used as a guide only, as cap sizes may vary by manufactorer.
*Head Size - Child: (19" Around the Head) (12" Front to Back) (12" Ear to Ear).
*Head Size - Petite: (21" Around the Head) (13 ¼" Front to Back) (13" Ear to Ear).
*Head Size - Petite/Average: (21.5" Around the Head) (13 3/4" Front to Back) (13 1/4"Ear to Ear).
*Head Size Average: (22" Around the Head) (14 1/4" Front to Back) (13 1/4" Ear to Ear).
*Head Size Average/Large: (22.5" Around the Head) (14 3/4" Front to Back) (13 3/4" Ear to Ear).
*Head Size Large: (23" Around the Head) (15 1/4" Front to Back) (14" Ear to Ear).
How To Put Your Wig On.
1) Take the wig out of the box, shake it gently to loosen fibers.
2) Find the front and the back of wig (remember the label goes in back).
3) Brush your own hair back, securing any longer pieces with a hair pin and place a wig cap over your head (keeps your existing hair from falling and the wig securely in place.
4) Grasp the wig at the top and slip it over your head from hairline to back.
5) Adjust wig so that the edges meet with your own natural hairline.
6) The wig should feel secure but no too tight. If necessary, adjust the back elastic straps with hooks toward the inner label for tightening, and away from the label if you need to loosen it.
7) Style as you would your own hair, keeping in mind to be gentle with the hair. Most wigs will require some cutting and styling to create the individual wearer's desired effect. A professional wig stylist who can help you achieve your look and teach you how to use various approved wig care products is preferred. Remember, you would be best to take off too little than too much as it will not grow back.
Styling and Maintenance of Your Wig.
1) Cleaning Your Wig:
- Brush the wig thoroughly, remembering not to pull too hard on the hair fibers.
- Fill your sink or basin with cold or luke warm water, adding shampoo specifically designed for synthetic hair, or shampoo for color treated hair.
- Let your wig soak for 5-10 minutes. You can move the wig around in a gentle motion, but do not rub it.
- Rinse in cold or luke warm water until thoroughly rinsed.
- Generously apply conditioner to the wig, working it through with fingertips.
- Rinse again until all conditioner is removed from the wig.
- Gently blot the wig with a towel. Do not rub.
- Run your fingertips through the wig fibers without pulling to loosen any tangles or knots.
- Place the wig on a wig stand to air dry. If the wig is human hair, you can use a blow dryer, but it is recommended you use a wig stand as well to preserve the wigs longevity.
2) Styling of Synthetic Wigs:
- If upon receiving your wig, you find you need it altered or restyled, it is advised you take it to a professional stylist to achieve the desired effect. Do not fuss with the styling of a synthetic wig, as most often a simple shake it and go method works just fine. Hence, these were made specifically for ready to wear. You can of course, clip and pin different sections to your liking for a change of style, but as you get used to the wig, you will most likely find that you do not have to do anything if at all in maintaining it's style. For curly wigs, use a pick or comb to loosen fibers, but do not pull on the hair.
3) Styling of Human Hair Wig:
- If upon receiving your wig, you find you need it altered or restyled, it is advised you take it to a profession stylist to achieve the desired effect. After air drying or using a blow dryer with the hair completely dry, use a wider tooth comb or brush, starting at the ends and working your way up to the roots. Remember it is human hair, and it too can get split ends if not treated delicately. Place the wig on it's wig stand and use hot rollers or a curling iron on a low setting to style the hair to your liking.
4) Storing Your Wig:
- Store your wig on a wig stand in a clean, damp free and heat free environment. This will ensure it stay tangle and soil free between wearing, as well as maintain the wig's style.
