Prom only comes once per year, and it's easy to get caught up in the excitement. With planning, shopping and pre-prom events at the forefront of your mind, you're probably thinking prom 24-7. But you couldn't turn into that girl. That girl who's so obsessed with prom that she has her entire night planned out, down the exact moment the limo will get her. The girl who campaigns as voraciously for Prom Queen as Obama did for the Presidency. That girl who plans her outfit to coordinate with the decorations (or vice versa, if she's on the committee).
No, of course not, you're far too level headed for that. Every Promzilla starts with a seemingly healthy interest in the event, that is compounded by weeks (or months) of day dreams and perfect moment fantasies. It's like being a Bridezilla, without the extremely long guest list. At first, Promzilla just wants everything to be perfect. By the time she's done, she has every minute detail so planned that even her mother can barely stand the stifling itineraries and to do lists.
OK, you're probably not that bad off? yet. But prom is undoubtedly on the forefront of your mind when it comes to shopping and planning. If you have a hard time walking past a store without the itch to run into look for the "perfect" (insert prom item here), you're starting to go a little overboard. If you pull out your prom outfit for daily reevaluation, you need to back up and de-prom your mind.
To avoid becoming that girl, try reevaluating how you look at Prom. Is it just another chance for an amazing time, or is it a life altering experience that must be executed perfectly? If you agree with the latter, it's time to readjust your priorities. Prom, while a prime place for tons of great memories, is just another night. Don't spend too much time obsessing over the who (to go with), what (to wear), where (to eat), when (to leave) and why (you want to be Prom Queen) of it.
The biggest Promzilla trap you can fall into is the fun of planning. Planning is, of course, something women relish. We spend hours agonizing over every little detail, because, on some level, we enjoy the excitement of it. Don't let the planning, and control that comes with it, become the end rather than the means. You may think that the more effort you put into planning, the more memorable and important prom may be. This, however, just isn't the case.
Step back from planning for a while. Take a breather from prom thoughts. The more you plan for and obsess over the event, the more it will become larger than life in your mind. If that comes to pass, you're destined to be a very disappointed Promzilla.
