Tips To Replacing Furnishings After Water Damage
Rachel Yoshida
There have been literally thousands of families who have lost most of or all of their household furnishings and personal belongings after their homes suffered tragic water damage by storms such as Hurricane Katrina. Even people in the Midwest went through the same thing after torrential rainfalls inundated their homes, businesses, and crops. Many of these folks were covered by insurance, but there were also some who were not.
When a homeowner is covered by insurance it can make the restoration process a lot easier if not less heartbreaking. For those who had no insurance, it can take months or even years to get their home back to normal if they ever can. Some simply had to walk away when the damage was too great to even think about overcoming without the aid of insurance.
For those lucky enough to be able to return home after repairs there was still the dilemma of having to replace so many home furnishings and belongings that were lost. Furniture, clothing, bedding, decorations, and anything that could be ruined by water and mold had to be thrown out. You never realize how much money you have invested in all of these things in your home until they all get destroyed and are gone.
Even when your belongings were covered in your insurance, it can still be hard to have enough money to replace everything exactly like it was. The costs of replacing things like furniture and electronics can take up a lot of the money. So it might be necessary to skimp a little on other things at least temporarily until you get back on your feet.
There are many places where you can make your money go further and still get some great replacement items. Yard sales, thrift stores, and even churches can help you get necessary items like rugs, curtains, bedding, home decorations, and even gently used clothing. You can not always be so picky when you are starting over with nearly nothing. There is definitely no shame in taking advantage of these sorts of deals when you have to be on a budget.
For uninsured people who have no money at all, churches and other organizations that help in time of crisis can be depended on to come to the rescue. Sometimes you might have to go to them and ask for help if they do not know you are affected by tragedy. Let them help you if they can. Pride will not give your kids a bed to sleep on or you a stove to cook their meals with. Take all the help you can get and maybe later down the road you will be able to help someone else in return.
