What Causes Body Odor

    View:
Body odor is often a result of poor hygiene or excessive sweating. When perspiration is allowed to remain on the body for a several hours, bacteria multiply and breed. Sweat is odorless, but bacterial action will result in offensive odor. Nervousness, stress, or anxiety can produce heavy sweating and indirectly promote body odors. Men generally sweat more than women, so they usually have more body odor.

Internal health problems may also cause body odor. Problems such as diabetes, zinc deficiency, liver problems, kidney problems, chronic constipation, certain parasites, or a metabolism imbalance may cause body odor. A sluggish liver, in combination with the effects of constipation, is a common cause of body odor. Toxins that accumulate in our bodies can also be the cause of body odor. In today's world we are bombarded with toxins in our food and environment that can store up in the body if the liver and kidneys fail to dispose of them. Toxins linger inside the body and may be eliminated through the skin. Additionally very strong-smelling foods such as certain spices, garlic and others have strong odors which are often emitted through the skin's pores. A proper and healthy diet should help in the complete digestion of ingested food and in the prompt elimination of waste products in the body.

To help prevent body odor, a person should eat lots of fruits and vegetables (especially raw), and whole grains. A high fiber diet generally aids in the digestion process. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water a day to help keep the kidneys clear and aid in the detoxification process. Some vitamins and herbs are considered helpful in the prevention of body odor. Herbs, which may be helpful, include: cinnamon, coriander, cumin, fennel, ginger, licorice root, nutmeg, oregano, and rosemary. Supplements which may be helpful, include: B6 (pyrodoxine), folic acid, magnesium, and zinc. Taking a bath with added baking soda may also be helpful in reducing body odor. For smelly feet, soak them in tea for about 30 minutes. Green tea or vinegar can also be applied to the body to reduce odor.

Avoid red meat, fried foods, and sugar. Also limit dairy products. Deodorants, though somewhat effective, tend to block the sweat glands, and may ultimately lead to aluminum toxicity.

What Causes Body Odor
Can people with body odor (BO) be 'immune' to their own unpleasant odor?

That's correct. The human nose can recognize 4,000 different scents and a really sensitive proboscis can detect up to 10,000 different scents. But if you smell something for a long time, your nose gets overwhelmed by the odor and can no longer detect it.

That's the reason why the perfume you're wearing loses its fragrance after a while and your friendly garbage collector isn't bothered at all by the trash around him. Other people can easily smell these things but not those who have been exposed to the same odors for quite some lime.

Can goiter cause BO?

Like bad breath which can indicate the presence of kidney disease or diabetes, BO can also signal an underlying medical problem. Goiter due to hyperthyroidism (or an overactive thyroid) can pro¬mote sweating, making your body more hospitable to odor causing bacteria.

Certain metabolic infectious dis¬orders, some drugs and foods like garlic, onions, and asparagus, can likewise cause BO. The same is true with uremia (a serious dis¬ease wherein the kidneys fail to eliminate waste products) and pneumonia.

If the problem persists in spite of good personal hygiene and the use of an effective deodorant, it's time to consult a physician to discover the root of your problem.

Can working in a chemical factory lead to BO?

Working in a chemical factory can prob¬ably make you smell bad but that doesn't mean the stench will linger on even after you've left the place.

The culprit in BO or bromhidrosis is bacteria acting on secretions of the apocrine sweat glands. Compared to the eccrine sweat glands that cool the body, the apocrine glands produce a milky fluid which has no known function except as food for bacteria.

When bacteria digest this food, they produce 3-methyl-2-hexenoic acid which has a stench that's enough to drive your enemies away. This be¬comes obvious in about six hours and the odor becomes stronger in warm weather.

Apocrine glands are found mainly in the underarms and the crotch which explains why these areas stink easily if you don't practice good personal hygiene. Asians have fewer apocrine glands than Americans or Europe¬ans. That means they stink less than other people. The bad news is that men have bigger apocrine glands and more androgen, the male hormone that stimulates the odor-producing gland.
