An Interview With A Glitz Girl Of Glitz Design

    View:
Interviewer: What's up with those fabulous Roller Doodles?

Ginger John: Seriously! They're definitely a favorite. Every time we come out with new styles and sizes they get grabbed up like they're a limited edition or something!

Interviewer: Any chance you'll be bringing back the Glitz Netz? Maybe even with some additional colors?

Ginger John: It's not in our current product line, but it was a fun item and I'll be sure to bring it up when we meet to discuss our next fabulous line!

Interviewer: So...how did the Glitz Girls meet and what made you decide to go ahead and do it and create Glitz Design?

Ginger John: I'd say that Laura brought the three of us together. I live close to Laura and Erin is an old friend of Laura.

Interviewer: What did your husbands think of your decision to start Glitz Design?

Ginger John: Initially, I think they all had the "pat the wife" on the head attitude and tell her she can do what she wants to do, but at this point we've got them pretty involved. They're all giving us business advice and attending the shows with us; it's very sweet how supportive and encouraging and proud they are of all of us.

Interviewer: Do the three of you get together just to scrapbook?

Ginger John: That's funny you asked that. We just got together this morning. We were working on a really cool, giant, 18x18, Acrylic clock sample. I'm not sure if it's top secret or not, but since it's for a proposed class, I guess not! We don't get together to scrapbook and create as much as we'd like to since the business side of the company is pretty demanding on our time. (And we do email each other about a million and one times each day).

Interviewer: Do you have anything you have to eat or wear when you scrapbook?

Ginger John: Well...I'm a Dr. Pepper girl. I always have one sitting with me when I scrapbook. Erin and Laura lean towards chocolate. This morning the chocolate treat was provided by Laura...she made no bake cookies. They were really good!

Interviewer: I know that you like digital scrapbooking. What advice would you offer to those who have never gone digital?

Ginger John: If I could say anything...I'd say, "Just try it!" It's intimidating to start out, but it's so fun once you get over that hump. I started out a couple years ago knowing next to nothing about Photoshop. I took a couple Jessica Sprague tutorials to help me get started and now I've switched over almost completely! It's just so amazing to me that I can have all my scrapbook supplies on CD's and when I create layouts they just go nicely into a little folder titled "PRINT". Then I can print them on my wide format printer or order them from Costco or Shutterfly. I will say that using the Create A Cart CD is a really good way to get started on digital. For some reason it's not quite as intimidating to make a card as it is to make a full layout.

Interviewer: Which line of Glitz is your favorite to play with?

Ginger John: My favorites change every time we put out a new line, but one that I have a soft spot for is the Rhapsody collection. The peacock is one of my favorites. I've done some fun stuff with that little guy! And I really love the Camelot, probably because I always find it more difficult to discover a great, fun "boy" line!

Interviewer: Share with me...one thing you think every scrapbooker ought to know.

Ginger John: Hmmm. Well, for me the entire point of scrapbooking is telling a story so I'd say every scrapper should know that their pages should say something. It should make you smile, laugh or cry or just fall back into a different moment that you never want to forget.

Interviewer: What's your favorite part about being a part of Glitz Design?

Ginger John: You know...I LOVE going to the CHA shows. I love getting to meet all our retailers face to face. It's such a fun community to work in!

Interviewer: What has been the hardest experience since starting Glitz Design?

Ginger John: Balance! All three of us would agree that the hardest part is giving enough of ourselves to each aspect of our lives: Glitz girl, Mom, Wife, Daughter, Sister, Friend...but then balance is something I think everyone struggles with at one point or another. Most days I think I'm doing a pretty good job and some days I realize that the balance has shifted without my knowledge and I have to re-evaluate!

Interviewer: Tell me about the Glitz Design website? It's such a fun place to visit. Is it what you initially envisioned?

Ginger John: It is! The only problem is that my imagination keeps on moving! I do LOVE the feel of our glitzy, fun website, but I've always got some new idea or change rolling around in my head.

Interviewer: Name someone you admire in the industry.

Ginger John: I can't answer that question with just one name. It's one of the reasons I love going to the shows...they're filled with creative, amazing people!

Interviewer: What kind of treat do you prefer...chocolate or candy?

Ginger John: Must I pick? I really have a sweet tooth a mile wide. But if I were to say I'd have to pick chocolate.

Interviewer: Diet or loaded?

Ginger John: Absolutely loaded!

Interviewer: What inspires you?

Ginger John: I think it depends on my mood...sometimes all it takes is someone else being creative and my thoughts start to spin. Sometimes when I watch TV. Sometimes when I see my kids do something zany. Sometimes when I'm talking to a friend.

Interviewer: Do you have a movie that's your favorite?

Ginger John: Okay...you're probably think I'm a bit weird, but I love Willow. I watched it growing up and it continues to be that movie that I throw in when I want some background noise.

Interviewer: What do you like to see in your own layouts?

Ginger John: I want my layouts to tell a story. I want my kids to be able to access them like a journal of our lives.

Interviewer: Is there a scrapbooking rule you like to follow?

Ginger: Tell a story and to do that...journaling is a must!

Interviewer: What would you say to others with similar aspirations of starting a company?

Ginger John: Don't worry if it's hard; it's supposed to be! Good luck!
