Is that true of you as well? If so, maybe you're not taking full advantage of the material you've already created. Creating new material is fun - and important. But don't overlook the opportunities to take your existing material and spin it into other forms.
I'll give you a specific example ...
I'll share the process I use myself for leveraging new material. This won't suit everybody, but at least you'll see an example which you can copy or adapt.
1. Write a newsletter
Every week or two, I write a feature article (just like this one) for my newsletter. I send this to my mailing list.
* Why: Maintain our relationship
* Time: 30-45 minutes
2. Article on my Web site
My Internet marketing assistant extracts this article from the newsletter and adds it to my Web site as a stand-alone article.
I record myself reading the article out loud, on my iPod. I "top and tail" it with an intro, outtro and theme music, and publish it to the Expert Gold podcast on gihanperera.com/podcast.html
* Why: More personal connection
* Time: 5 minutes to record, 10 minutes to publish
5. Blog it
My assistant copies the article across to the First Step support FAQ blog at http://first-step-support.info. If it's relevant, I'll also copy it across to the Magnetic Messages blog at magneticmessages.info/.
* Why: Authority, credibility, Google traffic
* Time: 5 minutes
6. Add to Vault
Finally (for now!), my assistant copies it across to the Leverage Matters Vault at gihanperera.com/vault.html, a growing directory of resources about leverage, on-line marketing and product creation.
* Why: Client loyalty, added value
* Time: 5 minutes
OK, that's it!
I'll admit that I don't do this every time I send a newsletter. But I do it often enough that I'm regularly publishing my material in various forms. Even though it's the same content, different people consume it differently - so they appreciate getting it into different ways.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg. I haven't even mentioned re-using this material in e-books, special reports, audio CDs or books!
How can you use this? Remember:
1. You're probably sitting on material you can easily turn into products.
2. You don't have to do all the work yourself.
Turn Your Idea Into
I am laying in my tent, camping and enjoying the sounds of the morning. The birds are singing and you can smell the freshness of the morning air. It is going to be a glorious day and it is time to get up and enjoy the day. So I climb out of my sleeping bag and get out of the tent. The sun is coming up and there is a crispness to the air.
I get ready to get washed and grab the water and suddenly my whole body freezes in shock and I scream out, "that's cold"! I think about putting some water on the fire to warm it up but that will take too long and get too hot. Then a light comes on in my brain and I have this idea about using some clear hose and making a hot water heater to take camping. No more cold baths in the woods for me. I draw up plans when I get home and build a prototype.
Next, I head off to the camping area again to test it out and see how well it functions. It works great and I imagine the money rolling in! I am going to have the lifestyle and I had always dreamed of after all and life is good.
I arrange meetings with the manufacturers I have been referred and they advise me on how much development will cost. After I recover from the shock and regain my composure, I think of ways to raise the necessary investment to make my dreams come true.
My bank wasn't interested in investing but a friend suggested that I get a secured loan if I was convinced my product would be a winner. I had the equity in my house and if I could get a secured loan this would raise enough money to get my project started. I went online to research the process. I realised that I would need to use my home as security but I was so confident in my invention that this didn't unduly concern me.
Of course, if I do not pay back the loan, there was a risk that I would lose everything but there was no turning back! I knew my camp heater was a winner so I applied and got accepted for a secured loan online. Once the funds were deposited into my bank account I contact the manufacturer and we get the plans underway. The next thing I know I am watching my heater being made and placed in stores. It's a great success and it sells really well. In no time at all, I am able to pay back my secured loan and haven't looked back since. Now I'm working on my next big idea!
