Pregnancy can be a scary time in our lives. There are times when we find ourselves asking the question "Can this possibly be normal?". When we see a strange discharge during pregnancy we tend to freak out just a little bit, or even a lot. There are times when this discharge can be a legitimate concern, however the majority of time it's nothing to be concerned about.
* Bleeding
Anytime that we see blood "down there" it is completely natural to be worried. You should always call and check in with your doctor if you feel that there is something wrong with you or your baby, don't doubt yourself! There is one type of bleeding however that comes up a lot and does not constitute a doctor visit. Bleeding after sex! This type of bloody discharge during pregnancy is completely normal. You see, your cervix (the opening to your uterus) is very sensitive at this time and more often than not sex can aggravate the cervix causing some light bleeding.
Call or go into your doctor's office IF:
*The bloody discharge is during the first 3 months of pregnancy.
*You experience contractions or cramps with the bleeding
*You are wearing a pad that is full of blood in less than an hour
*If you have moderate to heavy bleeding that lasts more than 24 hours.
* White, Lumpy Discharge
If you see a thick, white lumpy discharge during pregnancy you may have a yeast infection which is very common when you are pregnant. Some women have these more than others. One sign that the discharge is actually yeast and not something more serious include itching or burning along with the discharge. A lot of women wonder whether it is okay to take an over the counter medication such as Monistat for thier yeast infections when they are pregnant. The answer to this is YES! Monistat is okay during pregnancy.
You need to understand, though, that there are times when a discharge accompanied by a burning or itchy feeling could be something else that requires a completely different type of treatment. So it is important that you visit with your doctor about your symptoms before discounting them as simply a yeast infection.
Pink, Clear Fluid
This is the most important kind of discharge to take note of during pregnancy as it could be the most troublesome. Anytime during pregnancy, but especially during the third trimester, a clear, pinkish fluid could be amniotic fluid and could mean that you have a leak or a tear in your amniotic sack. This is a big deal girls. Call your doctor.
Fortunately when this clear, pinkish discharge during pregnancy occurs it isnt amniotic fluid, but instead, it is just a little urine. As humiliating as that might be, we are pregnant and yes, disgusting things happen, like urinating on yourself!
Call your doctor, however, if you see these signs, then you should head for the ER:
*If you see any blood mixed in with the discharge
*Regular contractions or pain with the discharge
A normal discharge during pregnancy is usually a white, milky color and is about the consistency of lotion. Anything other than this is a good reason to talk with your doctor.
