The Psychology Of Leadership

    View:
In coaching clients on Leadership we've noticed an early sticking point. Though different people give different reasons, there is a common theme: at this point, the clients seem to be showing resistance to 'stepping up' to Leadership. They of course don't accept that it's resistance; from where they stand it seems impossible to assume Leadership, '...until...'

Here are some of their 'untils':

"Until 'they' accept my role, and I am officially 'anointed' as leader"; "until I've got 'all my ducks in a row' - finished everything I have to do"; "until I've managed some tricky interpersonal issues"; "until I've got somebody in place to replace me 'doing' all the tasks I'm currently spending all my time on"; "until I've got my MBA"...

It's as though they regard growing into leadership as an incremental process - a place you get to after completing all the prior steps. In fact we've met people who assume that because they have mastered a busy and complex managerial job, they are now qualified as a leader - as if it's the next step on the career ladder!

A 'State Change'

But growing into leadership isn't incremental - it's a 'state change'. It doesn't take time; it takes a transformation - of outlook, courage and focus. Most of us still have to 'manage stuff', even after assuming leadership - we don't have the luxury of having staff to delegate to, and time in the diary to 'be a leader'. So management is different from leadership - not better or worse, just a different state. What's needed is the kind of state change that happens (hopefully!) when you realise you're the only person who's noticed the house is on fire! You don't wait for permission, or to have your position ratified, or for people to like and accept you - you take control and do whatever needs to be done to put the fire out!

You'll Know it When you See it

And you can see it and feel it. If you've ever been lucky enough be present when somebody 'gets' it, there's a visible and palpable difference in the way they talk, move and hold themselves from the way they did before. What that difference is, will be different from person to person. Some get louder and more obviously forceful; others may remain quiet and unassuming - but you'll still be able to see the difference.

When you've experienced this state change for yourself, you may finally realise that what you have been calling Leadership is mostly actually 'management' - at a very senior level maybe, but 'management' nevertheless. Leaders are as different from managers, as eagles are from chickens - both essential, functional in their own way, but different creatures. And, just as good managers aren't necessarily good leaders, so great leaders aren't always good managers. Once you know they are different skill sets, and have experienced the difference in 'feel' between them, then you are well placed to assess your weaknesses and create a development programme to fill the gaps.

The Challenge of Being Both!

The real challenge for most of us is to manage the transition from management to leadership, not on a one-time basis (for we don't have that luxury), but from moment to moment, day to day, as the requirements change. We need to learn to be both. To be able to do that, we need to have experienced the difference, so we can feel what state we're in, and check that's it's appropriate to the situation at hand. And in answer to the question, "When will I be ready for Leadership?", our answer is "Right now - if you really want to be!"
The Psychology Of Leadership
The 5 pillars are the foundations that convert a team to an organization transforming powerhouse. When leaders become aware of their work environment and the affects they have on it, when they learn the Psychology of groups and how it applies to the actions, reactions and emotions of teams and departments, then the foundation for the pillars is created.

Inspiration of individuals will make a difference, but inspiration of teams and of the perceptions of work those teams have, define a transformational leader and become apparent in organizational effectiveness and results.

The more people around you that become aware of the psychology of how and why teams and organisations become what they are, the more success you will have in achieving your objectives. And, the greater leadership you will inspire in others.

Share the insights you've gained with others in your different environments, teach them what you have learned. With a greater awareness of the psychology of leadership and the emotional atmosphere it creates, you can cultivate environments that cause you and others to be more effective and fulfilled in your work and life. And together, you and your teams can build the five pillars and not only transform your performance, but the performance of those around you.

Here are the 5 foundations for teams to make this happen:

? Have a Methodology for Change

? Have a Greater Purpose

? Speak a Common Language

? Create a Supportive Environment

? Have a Unified Identity

You must have a Methodology you believe can make a Change. This article has given you some foundations in leadership psychology that influences individuals and groups in a powerful enough way to change organizational culture. If you have applied some of what you have learned from Part I and II of this article, if you have become more aware and have increased your Circle of Tolerance, then this works for you.

Having a Greater Purpose. Find something bigger than the group, something that is even bigger than the organization. A reason the group is greater than the people in it is that the purpose of the group is greater or nobler that the personal goals of each individual.

You must speak a Common Language. Because of the specific nature of the Psychology of Leadership, it carries with it a specific language to be able to understand and explain awareness, change, and a higher level of living in a concise and effective way.

You must maintain an internal Supportive Environment. As an elite group that shares and uses this psychology, you can excel far greater than as an individual. Supporting one another is essential for ultimate success.

You must have a Unified Identity. While each individual has his/her own identity, the collective group must have a common goal and thus, a common identity in line with that goal. This can be as simple as "The Efficiency Group."

Each pillar represents an essential characteristic of groups capable of bringing out the best in each other. Together they form a cohesion that expands competence. A team who has cultivated the 5 Pillars no longer sees work as work, but as an essential part of their life and growth as a human being. Their power comes from an infectious enthusiasm that seems to be inherent.

Yet this "Inspiration" is cultivated. And the leadership behind this power originates in awareness. Awareness of the psychology that affects us, the people around us, and the environments we work and live in.

You have learned the foundations to Ascend and Transform as a Leader. You have learned the foundations to build transformational teams to create change, and you have established a Leadership Identity to bring it together.

Now the next step is up to you!
